Dr. Raymond Charles Barker was a dynamic paragon in the New Thought movement. Best known for his leadership in Religious Science, his initial ministerial ordination came through Unity School in 1940 by Unity co-founder Charles Fillmore. While Dr. Barker is a household name in Religious Science circles, he is less known to Unity students – that is, until his most renowned student, Dr. Louise Hay, is mentioned. Dr. Hay, who founded the Hay House empire, was a student of Dr. Barker and received her professional practitioner licensure while studying with him.
Dr. Barker’s teachings of the principles of mental science are straightforward and unapologetic. By example, his very first chapter in The Power of Decision, called The Intelligence Factor, begins:
“The individual’s ability to act unintelligently in a universe of Intelligence is amazing.”
Dr. Barker proceeds, “You were born as Intelligence in a universe of Intelligence to unfold, evolve and create as Intelligence…There is one basic mental Law. What you place in your subconscious mind must appear as your experience.” The Power of Decision lays out a compelling and pragmatic mode for exercising the Power of Will, from the initial point of choice (a.k.a., “the power of a decision”) through to the actual realization of our desires.
