RESPONSIVE READING for: Divine Order – Mary of Alphaeus (“the other Mary”)

Mary of Alphaeus was the mother of a disciple of Jesus.  Alphaeus means “a supplanter,” implying taking the place of; a reversal of natural order and prioritizing the spiritual order.  “We … consecrate ourselves with all our faculties to spiritual expression; then Spirit in us supplants and succeeds the sensual.  We are in truth spiritual,
and we function naturally only when we function spiritually”
(MBD).  Her son, James “the less” or “the younger” was designated by Charles Fillmore as representative of the spiritual faculty of Order.

“There were also women looking on from a distance [at Calvary].  Among them [was] Mary the mother of the younger James [also called James the less] ….  These women had followed [Jesus] when he was in Galilee and ministered to him” (Mark 15:40).

I am a follower of the Christ.
Let there be less of me, let there be more of Thee–
less of the human, more of the divine.

“When it was evening . . . Mary Magdalene and the other Mary remained sitting there, facing the tomb”
(Matthew 27:61).

When personality feels lost, Individuality of Spirit prevails.
Lord, teach me humility.   Let me Your servant be.

“After the Sabbath, as the first day of the week was dawning, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary came to see the tomb” (Matthew 28:1-2).  [An angel told them Jesus had risen.]  Then [the two women] went away quickly from the tomb … overjoyed, and ran to announce this to his disciples” (Matthew 28:8).

The Christ is first in my life, alive and present as overflowing joy.
Lord, give me serenity, selfless and free.

“And behold, Jesus met them on their way and greeted them. They approached, embraced his feet,
and did him homage. Then Jesus said to the, ‘Do not be afraid.
Go tell my brothers to go to Galilee, and there they will see me’”
(Matthew 28:1-10).

I behold the light of the living Christ in my life.
Harmony is now established.
Fear and discord cease.
All is in divine order.
Now there is peace.
